Carmelo Salemi graduated as clarinettist at the "Vincenzo Bellini" Music High School of Catania. Since he was a child, he plays "friscalettu" in different folk groups and in the meantime he learnt from his father how to make by himself the "friscalettu". That‘s an old pastoral and agrarian tradition whose techniques of building orally come down. He had honour to play with Rosa Balisteri, one of the most representative artist of southern Italy folk tradition. He participated at the workshop "I viaggi di Gulliver" directed by Angelo Branduardi. In 2002 with Folkclub⁄Ethnosuoni he recorded the first album HYBLA. The same year the album was presented with two performances at the well-known FIMU Festival in Belfort (Francia). |
In 2003 some of his chants were selected for the followings compilations in France and in Spain: Italie Instruments de la musique populaire (BUDA RECORDS-MUSIQUE DU MONDE, distributed by UNIVERSAL FRANCE); SICILIA Canto Nuovo (IRIS MUSIC, distributed by HARMONIA MUNDI); Las Musicas de Italia (FNAC, España). In July 2004 he performed at the Fesitval LES VOYAGES DU TIRE LAINE at Lille (Francia), and in September at Colfontaine (Belgio). In 2005 two chants are published in a compilation by the ARC MUSIC, an English recording company, and in the meantime he cut the second album named A SUD DELL‘ANIMA (FolkClub⁄Ethnosuoni). He played at the International Award "Ragusani nel mondo", attended by Susan Sarandon. He played at the Cap Sud International Festival at Mons (Belgio) where was interviewed by the RTBF, the national Belgian Tv network. In November 2006 the historic compilation Antologia della musica siciliana, produced by DÉJÀVU, collected two songs of Salemi. |
